The Burren and Lisdoonvarna area of Co. Clare is famous around the world for a few reasons. The Burren itself is a thing of scenic beauty, while Lisdoonvarna’s matchmaking festivals provide a pageant of humanity worthy of chronicling in a Christy Moore crowd-pleaser. Not the most likely spot for a festival of extreme and experimental music, then.
There, the Roadside Tavern plays host to Roadburren Fleadh (a pun on Dutch festival Roadburn), a festival of Irish black metal, drone/ambient and sound-art, featuring the cream of the country’s fringe, among them international cult favourites From the Bogs of Aughiska and Celtachór, among others. Also on the cards: screenings of Irish metal documentaries courtesy of film series Fractured, visual art, an Irish metal merchandise shop, and tastings of craft beer from all over the country.
For the discerning metalhead that has long since outgrown their backpatches and battle vests, or for the musical academic that wishes to explore new, dischordant areas of the Irish avant-garde in a picturesque surrounding.
